Yeo’s Journey
Cheddar Gorge & Caves
‘Yeo’s Journey: The Power of Water’ is an immersive installation created in partnership with Cheddar Gorge and Caves, transporting visitors through time to unveil the ancient story of how the mighty River Yeo sculpted a geological marvel within Cox’s Cave in Somerset, England.
Working closely with the client, we crafted a 7-minute ambient composition. Ethereal yet uplifting, it enhances the narrative journey without overpowering it. Using synthesised pads and organic sounds, we blended processed acoustic instruments to create a dreamscape bridging imagination and reality.

The experience unfolds across nine meticulously curated zones within the cave, each pivotal in narrating the tale. At the heart of it all is Yeo, the central character whose presence threads seamlessly throughout the entire journey, guiding visitors through it.
For atmospheric sound design, we used field recordings of caves, hydrophone recordings of rivers, and various water movements to convey realism. Given Yeo’s constant movement, we emphasised significant motions with subtle water sounds and airy whooshes. The biggest challenge was managing the exhibition space acoustics in the caves, so we used convolution to ensure the sounds appeared natural.
To breathe life into Yeo’s character, we enlisted the talents of the voice-over artist Shiraz Engineer, whose captivating narration, scripted by the Cheddar Gorge team, infuses each zone with depth and clarity, elucidating the rich history of the caves and serving as a beacon to navigate the immersive landscape.
